The 3rd Cleethorpes Scout group is one of the 41 sections set up in Humberside as part of the Better Prepared project funded by Youth United Foundation. The Better Prepared project involved bringing Scouting to some of the most deprived areas of the country to give young people the skills and confidence to take on any challenge in life.
Recently, the 3rd Cleethorpes Scout group decided to take part in The Scout Association's ‘A Million Hands’ campaign. The group began researching various issue topics that affect their local community. During the discussions the young people spoke passionately about homelessness and why they wanted to help. Homelessness is something that these young people witness every day and that most people walk past without thought, but this Scout group decided to do something different – to offer help and support in any way they could.
The group heard about how charity group YMCA were calling for people to take part in their ‘Sleep Easy’ campaign. This was where people from the local community slept on the streets for one night to raise money for the homeless people in their area. This gave them a huge insight into what some people go through every night and just how impactful the money to help would be people sleeping rough.
The group immediately signed up to get involved and got started on fundraising.
So far the group has raised over £1000 to help support their local community and target some of the key issues that matter.
