Homelessness is a large problem in East London boroughs, particularly in Newham where it is estimated that 5,000 young people are living in temporary accommodation or completely without accommodation. Recognising this as a major issue in their community, Newham Junior Sea Cadets, closely supported by a team of Senior Cadets, asked for donations of essential toiletries and warm clothing items from friends and family. Together, they decorated and filled the boxes and delivered them to the Bonny Downs temporary shelter for the homeless, just in time for Christmas. The Cadets didn’t stop there with their festive goodwill; they also performed a well-received carol service for the elderly residents at Manor Farm care home.
The success of this project was attributed to the great team work between the Junior and Senior Cadets, who provided guidance and advice for the younger Cadets. The team was featured in the local newspaper, further raising the profile of social issues in East London and the Cadets’ appetite for social action.
