Youth United Social Action Awards 2017 - Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, Fire Cadets

Youth United Social Action Awards 2017 - Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, Fire Cadets

12th January 2017

The Tyne and Wear Fire Cadets requested to take part in the community clean-up day in and around Farndale Park in Newcastle on 18th February 2016. This was organised by a number of key partners, in conjunction with young people from the North Benwell Youth Project, in response to a long standing and growing problem in the area which has a significantly negative effect on all local residents.

The Fire Cadets were asked to collect rubbish (including four chairs and a fridge), which weighed in excess of 78kg. The majority of the Fire Cadets live in the immediate area and were very keen to contribute to the project. They felt that if other young people and residents in the area saw them removing the increasing piles of refuse from the lanes, it may encourage others to take ownership and stop fly tipping and littering.

In leading by example, the Fire Cadets not only physically removed the refuse but also passionately encouraged other young people to become involved and understand the impact they can make to positively change the community in which they live they live.
